Project 2: Structure and Body: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration

In this project, I teamed up with other students to create a 1:1 bamboo structure for sleeping. We were delegated to do different tasks, such as research, design, interviewing people and later on, preparing our presentation boards and building the structure.

Stage 1: Meeting

This was when we had our first meeting. We worked fast and started delegating tasks for the team members. I was assigned to interview the residence near the grounds we were gonna build on. I was also taking notes for the team during meetings.

Stage 2: Model mockups & Finalizing Desings

Our team came up with multiple mock-up models and ultimately we came to agree with a final design. I suggested ideas such as having a wave structure with vertical bamboo pillars for ease of construction as compared to a curved structure, which was incorporated into the final structure

Stage 3: Construction

After finalizing our designs and measurements to scale, we started working as a team to construct a usable 1:1 structure for sleeping. We constructed our structure in the amphitheater of Taylor's University from dawn to dusk. Finally, we took apart our structure to reassemble it at the site.

Presentation

Ultimately, once we finished our reassembling at the site, we went home due to the rain. Our group then made a video, introducing the functions of our structure. Each of us had to design an abstract tattoo stamp interpreting our experience during this project. It was added to the presentation board. We then presented our structure using presentation boards filled with information such as its exploded axonometric, details and joints, elevations, sections and so on along with our video in school.

Self-Reflection:

Through this project, I was able to interact with my teammates which were also my course mates. There were some ups and downs during this journey, but I was glad that we were able to depend on each other to work through our issues and construct a final 1;1 structure for the community. I was able to learn about the materiality of bamboo, and how to construct a stable structure. I also gained more insight on how my peers could design and construct models during stage 1 and 2. I learnt a lot from my teammates which ultimately helped me during my final project of this module.
