Architectural Design II
This module taught me the principles and methods of design analysis, abstraction, and synthesis, particularly in building and architecture. The focus on "User and Context" highlighted the relationship between users and their natural environment. Through studio exercises, I studied architectural spaces through precedent studies and explored form and space through conceptualization. The design project challenged me to create a small structure that met user needs and integrated with the site context. Overall, this module provided a solid foundation in design thinking, fostering a holistic approach to create functional and user-centric spaces. These insights will shape my future design practice.
This assignment teaches diagramming architectural principles by abstracting and simplifying ideas for better comprehension. It explores how architecture and spaces are created through design intentions and the construction of architectural elements such as solids, planes, lines, and frames. The assignment incorporates the use of pure and diagrammatic models to express architectural ideas. Successful completion of this assignment will lead to a comprehensive understanding of the assigned works and the ability to apply the ideas and concepts in future projects.
In this assignment, you will build upon the knowledge gained in the previous assignment by applying architectural principles to create meaningful architectural spaces. You will explore conceptual and operational procedures to produce a significant architectural gesture. The selected architectural principle(s) will inform the generation of forms and the crafting of spaces. The assignment highlights the disconnect between modern humanity and nature, emphasizing the need for contemplation and a deeper connection to the natural world. Your task is to design a Contemplative Pavilion that enhances the relationship between humans and nature. The pavilion should provide a space for individual contemplation within a maximum volume of 125 m3. Through research, you will discover and explore a hypothetical tropical environment setting and delve into the architectural principles gathered from the previous project. You will also examine the effects of materials on architectural space and consider the tactile and construction aspects. The assignment aims to foster critical thinking, discussion, and the use of drawing and modeling as essential design tools. By completing this assignment, you will demonstrate the ability to design a simple structure using architectonics and showcase a basic understanding of materiality and detailing to capture experiential qualities in your design.
For the final task of this course, students will design a Tropical Sanctuary within the Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA). The sanctuary should provide areas for contemplation, rest, discussion, and other activities within a maximum built-up space of 100sqm. The design must be able to comfortably accommodate two people, including the student and a family member, for a short duration of 2-3 days. It is essential for the design to harmonize with the tropical site context, creating a unique architecture that integrates with the landscape and activities of the area. By applying architectural principles, materiality, and constructability, the design should offer a memorable spatial experience for the users. The project aims to develop students' understanding of concepts, program, and process in architectural design, as well as their ability to interpret and analyze site context and user requirements. Students will learn to design a small structure that balances internal architectural elements and external design values, respecting both user needs and site context.
Reflection:
Throughout this module, I have gained valuable knowledge and experiences in architectural design. The assignments provided opportunities to analyze architectural principles, understand user-centric design, and create meaningful spaces within specific contexts. I learned to abstract ideas, generate forms, and craft spaces that respond to user needs and site characteristics.
The assignments emphasized the importance of analyzing and diagramming architectural principles, considering the user and their environment, and balancing internal and external design values. Through research, conceptualization, and iterative design processes, I developed skills in creating cohesive and site-specific architectural solutions. This module has expanded my understanding of design principles, user-centricity, and the relationship between architecture and context. I am confident that the knowledge and experiences gained here will greatly contribute to my future pursuits in architectural design.
