In the module on Building, Construction and Materials, I was able to explore the different ways in how architects construct buildings with different materials. It broadened my understanding of the relationship between materials, construction, and design. I have learned to analyze and interpret the choices made by architects in material selection and their impact on building aesthetics and functionality. Additionally, I have developed skills in construction detailing and gained practical knowledge of the interplay between design and technical aspects. These assignments have deepened my appreciation for the importance of considering construction methods and materials in creating successful architectural designs.

This assignment focuses on building materials and their application in architecture. Students are required to conduct a case study on a selected building, analyzing the architectural and structural materials used and understanding the design concept behind their selection. They will describe the installation process of one material and present their findings on an A2-sized board. The board should include background information on the architect and building, images and details of the materials, sketches of material installation, relevant building images, and a conclusion on the materials' choice and application. Independent research and a suggested methodology are encouraged for completing the assignment.
This assignment focuses on building construction and detailing, aiming to develop students' knowledge and understanding of construction through drawings. It emphasizes the inter-relationship between design and technical knowledge, highlighting the importance of addressing construction methods, structural integration, material selection, and other complex issues in the design process. The assignment's objectives include developing an understanding of structural elements, demonstrating awareness of practical considerations in building development, and showcasing construction manual drawing skills. In groups, students will produce a construction drawing set detailing the building elements of a double-storey terraced house, using either reinforced concrete frame with brick infill or timber as the construction materials. Each drawing will be done on separate A3-sized paper, and a physical model will also be required.

In these two assignments focused on building construction and materials, I have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills in the field of architecture. The first assignment allowed me to explore the choice and application of materials in building design, analyzing architectural and structural materials used in a case study building. It provided insight into the reasoning behind material selection and their impact on architectural and structural features. Through research and presentation, I deepened my understanding of the interplay between materials and design concepts. The second assignment focused on building construction detailing, emphasizing the importance of technical knowledge and the integration of design and construction. By producing a construction drawing set and creating a physical model of a double-storey terraced house, I gained hands-on experience in documenting and explaining building elements. This assignment highlighted the significance of addressing practical considerations, such as construction methods and material selection, to ensure successful design outcomes.
